Employee identifies $10k pay gap between him and coworker with the same role, boss dangles it in front of him as a bonus

I accidentally found a $10k pay gap between myself and someone with the same role/tenure. Now they want me to gamble with my raise.

The company wants to give me the $10k raise, but only in a monthly bonus that we are eligible for. The problem is that the bonus is structured 50% individual goals, 50% store goals. If I miss one of my ten metrics goals I lose my entire individual bonus. There are four store goals. Each one makes up 25% of that half of bonus. Also, guess who makes up the goals. That's right, upper management. They're just trying to get me to quit, right?

Commenters gave their advice on the situation.

RYAQN Get offer, say 10k guaranteed or I walk. Then walk anyways.
AngryRaptor13 They definitely want an excuse to not give you the raise.
notthisagain They probably don't want you to quit, but they don't want to pay you fairly either. This offer is a ploy to retain you on unfair terms. Play them back. Agree to the bonus structure so that you get something, and start looking for another job.
JadedFault702 Ask why the coworker gets 10k more base but yours is contingent on goals. Play dumb and ask via email. Also yea look elsewhere
JTEL918 Start looking elsewhere. Making you jump through hoops to get what you're owed is psychotic.

SomeSamples A bonus is not a raise. Ask for an actual raise. Don't accept a bonus unless it is given to you directly in one lump sum.
bqtchef They do this knowing the store will not achieve their goals and as for you the probably think you wont meet any of the metrics.
BlackStarBlues The company wants to give me the $10k raise, but only in a monthly bonus that we are eligible for. That is not a raise.
solidblu Best to say unless it is in writing as guaranteed then it isn't real. Never count a bonus as something you will get. Is on the names bonus...
West-Kaleidoscope 129 That's not a raise. Make sure you let them know that this isn't a raise, it's an incentive. If the other employee doesn't have to jump through hoops to get the extra 10k than you should have to either... Unless they're worth the extra 10k.
MM_in_MN That's the carrot at the end of the stick. You'll never reach it, they will make the goals harder and harder to achieve. Your coworker gets the 10k as salary. But yours is merit based? And based on store metrics that you have no control over?? No.
voodoobunny999 "No, I guess you didn't understand me. I said I'm actually being paid $10,000 less to do the same job as somebody else. I didn't say they were offered an opportunity to potentially get a bonus if subjective things outside of their control happen to fall their way. Big difference, right?"
Notinthenameofscienc Depending on what state you live in it might be illegal for them to be paying you less. I'd look into it.
brewtus007 So that's 10k max one-time, versus compounding year over year. The math seems to favor them greatly.
The-truth-hurts1 Nup.. someone gets $10k and doesn't have to jump through hoops? Then neither do you Start looking for a new job
Zealousideal Month 662 Can you twist the understanding, so it means. they will give you the 10k and the other 10k bonus if goals are met is a new policy that is ontop of that? Just start writeing that you think the above is such a great idea. Play stupid and accidentally mention the new 10k policy to the rest of the store.
starsol3 I'd push for it to be added to your base salary, not hidden inside a bonus structure they control. A guaranteed $10k and a potential $10k are not the same thing. Whether they're trying to make you quit or just save money, I'd start looking elsewhere while negotiating.
kenzo99k Even if the bonus works, what happens next year? The problem with a bonus is that you work for the same money next year. It doesn't build. And were you already on a bonus plan? What about that baseline bonus that you would have made anyway.
